What’s So Great About B&Bs?!

What is a vacation at a bed and breakfast like? Why would I want to stay at one? What makes B&Bs so special?

Christmas Eve Smorgasbord 2014

Each year, Golden Stage Inn decks the halls for Christmas Eve festivities.  Innkeeper Julie celebrates her Swedish heritage with her family, and all are invited to participate in the feast.  Appetizers and beverages start the evening off.  Traditional Swedish dishes are served in a buffet-style dinner, followed by an array of desserts.  It is truly an evening of light and laughter!  Guests are invited to participate for $25 per person.  Dinner is served around 7, but arrive earlier for appetizers and mingling!  For more information, please read 2013’s blog post about the Christmas Eve Swedish Smorgasbord at Golden Stage Inn.  Here are a few photos from last year’s Smorgasbord:

Santa Lucia offers Swedish desserts of apple cake and almond cake.  “God Jul,” as the napkin says, is pronounced “Good Yule” and means Merry Christmas!

Golden Wedding Anniversary Special

Celebrating your 50th anniversary?  We’d like to treat you to one night at the Golden Stage Inn for just $50 – valid any time during the month of your 50th anniversary.  After all these years, you both deserve a relaxing getaway to the countryside.  Recently, we had two instances of two couples celebrating their 50th anniversary at Golden Stage Inn at the same time!

50th Wedding Anniversary

In October, we said ‘Congratulations’ to John and Donna (above), and Theodore and Judy (below).

Golden 50th Anniversary!

The couples above spontaneously celebrated their anniversaries on the same weekend without having known each other in advance!  Back in September, two sisters celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries on the same weekend as well.  They kindly provided these photos for a flashback.

Each one has something unique to offer and is committed to customer service and maintaining the unique character of Vermont downtowns.  The owners are often found at the store, making for a more personal experience than you’d have at a chain store or a mall.  Small, owner-run businesses are truly a characteristic of Southern Vermont, and we hope you’ll someday discover in person what makes the towns of Ludlow, Chester and Cavendish so special!

A Very Scary Halloween

This Halloween was quite a fright at Golden Stage Inn!  Every October, Innkeepers Julie and Michael continue the tradition handed down by the previous owners of the inn – transform the quaint bed & breakfast into a haunted house!  Each year has a theme…2013 was the Insane Asylum, 2012 was Proctorsville Prison, 2011 was “The Guests Who Never Left.”  (Just kidding, we let our guests leave…eventually…)

And for 2014, we turned Golden Stage Inn into a Carnival…or is it Carn-EVIL?!

Check out the spooky photos and spine-tingling video!  We reward visitors for their bravery with homemade cookies, hot apple cider, and Halloween candy, of course.  This year, about 100 people came through the bed & breakfast.  So if you’re ever in Cavendish or Proctorsville for Halloween, stop by the Inn!  We’ll be sure to scare you silly.

Golden Stage Inn Sitting Room

We’ve renovated one of our sitting rooms!  This cozy sitting room is towards the back of inn – as you approach the solarium for breakfast, you’ll see it just past the coffee & cookie room.  There is a comfortable sofa and a rocker for reading and chatting, or a table with chairs if you prefer playing games and solving puzzles.  A gas-fired stove provides warmth, while plants liven up the space.  We hope this space offers everything you seek in a New England bed and breakfast.

Amazingly, we’ve had an unexpected triumph with one of our houseplants!  This Dr. Seuss-like oddity is called a ‘Pony-tail Tree.’  Check out these before and after pictures…

Golden Stage Inn house plant in sitting room

Before:  The plant was in a cramped pot and a shady, cool corner on the second floor.  Were those frail little wisps of pony-tail leaves even worth keeping?  Julie thought it deserved a chance…

After:  The Pony-Tail Tree was re-potted and given a new home in the sunnier, warmer sitting room downstairs.  This photo just goes to show what a change of location can do for you!  Addressing your own needs is something we all need to do, and when we give them attention and care, we flourish.  Maybe a relaxing break in the sunny Golden Stage sitting room is what we all need!
