Organic Beekeeping Workshop with Ross Conrad

This weekend, Ross Conrad will lead an organic beekeeping workshop for intermediate and advanced beekeepers just a 30 minute drive from Golden Stage Inn Bed and Breakfast. Meet other beekeepers and learn from a widely acclaimed Vermont organic beekeeper. Ross Conrad is the author of several articles and two books, Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture and The Vermont Beekeeper’s Cookbook.  His apiary, Dancing Bee Gardens, sells honey bee products such as raw honey, votive candles and propolis tinctures, and is located in Middlebury, VT. Earlier in February he gave a talk at the Grafton Nature Museum about honeybee ecology and natural history. Ross Conrad leads organic beekeeping workshops across North America regularly. The March 15th workshop in Chester VT will be all day and focus specifically on the honey bee and how to use organic beekeeping principles as a beekeeper in Vermont. Topics include swarming, mindfulness, non-toxic mite and disease control, and apitherapy. Registration for the event is $45, and it will be held from 9am to 5pm at the NewsBank Conference Center in Chester, VT. Bring a brown bag lunch for the half hour lunch break at noon.

Vermont Bumblebee Talk with Sara Zahendra

Sara Zahendra of Vermont Center for Ecostudies will be giving a talk on native bumblebees on Thursday March 20th at 7:00 pm at the Rockingham Free Public Library in Bellows Falls. The library is an easy half hour drive from Golden Stage Inn Bed and Breakfast, following Route 103 for almost the entire trip. Sara Zahendra will tell the audience about the Vermont Bumblebee Survey, which she is a coordinator for. This survey is a great way for Vermonters to participate in citizen science and contribute to the health and conservation of native pollinators. Learn why Vermont bumblebee populations have been on the decline, and why some species of bumblebee have disappeared altogether. Receive an update on the current status of the Vermont bumblebee, discover this pollinator’s role in the ecosystem, and enjoy light refreshments. The Vermont Center for Ecostudies calls the bumblebee “a silent messenger of environmental health.” Free to the public.
